Description
April Snow is a prized selection from the April Camellia Series, which were developed to have improved winter cold hardiness and a later bloom cycle than most other Camellia japonica. April Snow is one of a few Camellia japonica recommended for growing as far north as St Louis, Missouri, USDA Zone 6a!
Exceptionally cold hardy to USDA Zone 6a, April Snow Camellia is prized for its abundance of gorgeous, 3-4 inch wide double flowers with pearl white petals and prominent yellow center stamens that are produced in late winter through early to mid spring, depending on your zone. Its glossy dark green foliage provides amazing contrast and a wonderful backdrop for the plentiful flowers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
A moderate growing Camellia with an upright habit of growth to about 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, April Snow can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge or background plant, in groupings, and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall.) When “limbed up” to form a small tree it serves well as an attractive and colorful specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Great for cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors overwinter for those who live above USDA Zone 6a, where not winter hardy. Spacing: 3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

Received glossy, healthy plant. Truly thought I should have delayed delivery, however, due to very hot and dry weather we were having. But, onward, filling planting hole with water and letting it soak in, then planting and watering. Camellia has shrugged off the heat and is thriving. As pretty today as when arrived and showing growth. Great plant!———————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I received the bush in a very good condition. Well packed, large and healthy. Planted it without any problems and it seems happy. No leaves have fallen off and it is making new leaves. I got it as a memorial to my little 14yr old dog that I lost this year. Am hopeful that it is able to winter here in Ohio as stated in the description.——————————————————So sorry for the loss of your furbaby. Keep us posted. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I was looking for a memorial tree to send to a friend in New Jersey and Wilson Bros’ zone searches were perfect. Being on the west coast, shipping to the east coast, and ordering from the south, I had no idea where to go. Site made it easy, pictures helped me find exactly what I wanted, and the ordering and shipping were fantastic. Seeing the pictures from others who ordered near the same span, I am confident that the memorial Camellias will be beautiful for years to come. Thank you.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope your friend enjoys it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I ordered this camellia as soon as it was back in stock in the fall of 2021. For some reason Fed Ex had a delay in delivering, and it came 2 days later than expected. (What else is new these days?) I was concerned, needless to say. But… the plant was very well secured in the box, and even though the box was slightly damaged, the plant was perfectly fine. Wilson Bros even taped paper packing over the root ball so that the soil stayed put and stayed moist. I couldn’t be happier with this camellia, and will gladly order from Wilson Bros again! My wife had to have a Camellia for Valentines Day and in our zone, the Wilson Brothers Gardens offered the best variety from which to choose. The Camellia arrived more quickly than expected, and was packed in a way that kept it protected during shipping. After a couple of days inside during the recent ice storm, it started blooming! My wife couldn’t be happier with her new April Snow Camellia and its white flowers. Thanks.———————————————We are so glad you and your wife are pleased and we hope you both enjoy it for years to come! I ordered this in mid April and it arrived in time and well packed. It’s been resting inside until it quit snowing and freezing here about two weeks ago. Leaves are intact and it will go into soil soon. We will see how things go next spring.——————————————We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG
