Spacing: 5-6′ for hedges, 12’+ for space between plants
A North American beauty with so many great attributes it’s hard to know where to start, the Atlantic Ninebark is a highly adaptable, fast growing and super easy-to-grow flowering shrub with 4 seasons of interest in the landscape. In late spring to early summer you can expect its mound of gracefully arching branches to be covered with abundant rounded clusters of very pretty flowers with 5 white petals surrounding a golden-yellow eye. In summer, the flowers are followed equally abundant seed clusters that start out orange deepening to red as they age, giving the appearance of a second bloom in a different color. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall, the shiny green leaves turn to yellow-bronze in fall. The attractive exfoliating bark takes the stage in winter. The bark is said to have 9 layers, hence the common name. Thriving in full sun to mostly shade and most any type of soil, including dry or wet clay and rocky sites, Atlantic Ninebark is one of the easiest and prettiest flowering shrubs you’ll ever grow.
Wildlife Benefits
Atlantic Ninebark has a very high value to many species of wildlife. Butterflies, bees and other beneficial pollinators rely on it for food and shelter. The Ninebark Pygmy Moth and the Unicorn Caterpillar are also visitors. Birds use the bush for shelter and the seeds for food.
