Description
A robust, tall and colorful North American native grass that deserves a spot in every landscape or garden, Big Bluestem Grass is a super-hardy grass that anyone can grow. It was once the dominant grass of the prairie which once covered large parts of the Midwest. Its architectural height, interesting flowers, and highly attractive foliage that changes color with the seasons makes it highly desirable for the home and commercial landscape. It forms a dense clump from 5 to 8 feet tall featuring upright stems with flattened leaves that emerge gray to blue green in spring turning to green with red tinges in summer and then reddish bronze through fall and winter. Late summer brings purplish 3-parted, finger-like flower clusters that resemble turkey feet, hence one of its common names of Turkey Foot Grass. The flowers are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Big Bluestem Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent in garden spaces or in groupings or large drifts or mass plantings in larger landscape borders and on slopes where its deep roots provide excellent erosion control. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, prairies, meadows or naturalized areas.
Spacing: 30 inches apart for mass plantings; 6+ feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Big Bluestem Grass is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well drained to dry soil of average to even poor fertility, including clay soils. It prefers full sun so we suggest at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day. A deep tap root gives it high drought tolerance when established. Good drought resistance once established. Cut plants back to just above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
