Description
One of the most cold hardy fig varieties, having survived single digit Fahrenheit temperatures, the Brown Turkey Fig is a self-fertile large shrub or medium size tree that produces a heavy crop of medium to large sized, bell-shape, deliciously sweet fruit with purplish brown skin. Fruits are produced in summer and usually a secondary crop in the fall. The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, cooking, canning, drying, and jams, jellies and preserves. Large, palmate leaves up to 10″ long provide a tropical look in the landscape.

Landscape & Garden Uses
Interested in edible landscaping? What could be more enjoyable and rewarding than installing a landscape you can eat? Fig trees are a fine specimens for use in the edible landscape. Their large and bold leaves provide a tropical effect in the landscape and you’ll be rewarded with loads of delicious figs. The Brown Turkey Fig tree is ideal for the home orchard and makes for a fine specimen or warm season privacy screen in landscape borders. Provide plenty of space as this one can reach up to 20 feet in height and width.
Growing Preferences
Fig trees will grow reasonably well in most soil types. They produce the best fruit in moderately to slightly acidic, moist but well-drained fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. In soil with low fertility it’ll be worth your time to mix in some organic compost to the native soil. They like the soil to hold a good supply of water, especially when the fruits are developing in summer, but not so much water that the soil stays constantly soggy or wet, which can be problematic. The best and most fruits will are produced when trees are growing in full sun. However, fig trees that receive a little shade during the hottest part of summer days will still produce good crops.
NOTE: In USDA Zone 7 it would be a good idea to provide some winter protection for your Brown Turkey Fig Tree. A heavy layer of mulch will help protect the roots during winter. Planting your Brown Turkey Fig on the east side of a home, or where it will be sheltered from north and western winds, will also provide long term protection during the cool season.

I purchased a Fig Tree from Wilson Bros. Gardens and I have to say the service is phenomenal, they company communicated constantly giving me updates about the order. The order arrived in a timely manner and I can’t wait to plant my fig tree, but due to the cold weather in Upstate NY I have to wait until the end of April early May to plant it. So far is doing well in the container the company sent it
