Description
‘Double Mint’ is a new, cold hardy Gardenia variety with a long bloom season that stretches from mid-spring to fall boasting abundant fragrant double flowers packed with white petals that resemble roses. The flowers are extremely fragrant and stand out beautifully against the deep green foliage on dense, compact mounds 3 feet tall and wide. The flowers are excellent for cutting and using in indoor arrangements.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense mound 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, the compact Double Mint Gardenia is an ideal choice as an accent, in groupings or as a wonderfully fragrant border or hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. In USDA Zones 7a and south to 8a we recommend planting Double Mint on the south or east side of the home where it will receive some afternoon shade and also be protected from the colder north winds of winter. Needless to say gardenias are a perfect fit for sensory gardens and near windows or outdoor living spaces where the fragrance can be enjoyed. A fine addition to white theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Gardenia are exceptionally easy to grow in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility and part sun, preferably morning sun with some shade or filtered sun in the mid afternoon hours. That said, Double Mint seems to take more sun than most other gardenia varieties. We have one planted here in Georgia that gets quite a bit of afternoon sun and it’s performing well. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other plant diseases. Does not require pruning but responds well to it for shaping purposes. if you prune do so after spring flowering. USDA Zones: 7a-9b Find Your Zone
Soil pH is important!
To flower their best and maintain deep green foliage color, all Gardenia require an acid to moderately acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. If your soil is alkaline foliage will turn pale-green to yellow and flowering will be diminished.
Soil pH is a measurement of the alkalinity or acidity of soil and is measured on a scale of 1-14, with 7 as the neutral mark. Any measurement below 7 indicates acid soil conditions, and anything above 7 indicates alkaline. If you’re unsure about the pH of your soil and whether or not it’s suitable for growing Gardenia it’s a good idea to test the soil pH in the planting area.
You can quickly test soil pH with an inexpensive soil pH tester probe. To raise the pH (make more alkaline) you can add pelletized limestone to the soil. To lower the pH (make more acid) you can apply Soil Sulfur, Aluminum Sulfate, or Chelated Iron. Adding organic compost to the soil or using compost as mulch can also help to increase acidity and maintain acid soil conditions.

This is my first order from Wilson Bros; your extensive selection & the ability to get larger plants than usually available by mail-order persuaded me despite the distance from Georgia to Oregon. I was not disappointed. The plant is beautiful & healthy, even with a couple of delays along the way by FedEx. Your packing is phenomenal. So good, in fact, that retirees like myself should be warned it may take more than 1 person to unpack the plant. We have been having unseasonably cool weather here for the past month so I have been reluctant to actually plant this beauty, but I think this is the weekend. You will undoubtedly see my name other times this spring!——————————————————Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review!
