Description
‘Gloria’ is an oldie-but-goodie evergreen Azalea introduced in the early 1900’s by the superstar azalea and camellia breeder Kosaku Sawada, who ranks at the very top of the list of those who have contributed most to the culture of Azaleas and Camellias in America. He was a successful nurseryman for many years, operating the Overlook Nurseries of Mobile, Alabama where he grew azaleas, camellias and other types of plants in thousands of new varieties he bred for the trade, most of which have fallen by the wayside over the years. We aim to change that.
‘Gloria’ Azalea is adored for her abundant and large brilliant deep pink flowers produced in early spring. The upper petal is adorned with deep red freckles. Sawada discovered and propagated this lovely and charming selection from a branch sport. Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide over time, add some history to your gardens by planting this eye-catching beauty as a specimen or in groupings in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders or home foundation plantings. Gloria is one of those flowering shrubs that throughout the year will always have you eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide at maturity, the ‘Gloria’ Deep Pink Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in partially shaded flowering shrub, woodland, and landscape borders., along paths and walkways, and in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Asian-theme gardens, Azalea gardens, pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, and partially shaded woodland gardens.
Spacing: 4 to 4.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 8′ or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Evergreen Azaleas are easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. They prefer a moist but well-drained and acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun is ideal. We suggest at least four hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. Moderate drought tolerance when established.
