Description
If you’re looking for a quick evergreen screen up to 20 feet in height, and would like to use a very handsome and dependable native plant, the Idyllwild Juniper, an outstanding cultivar of the red cedar, is a perfect choice. When left to grow naturally it will form a natural looking pyramid similar to red cedar, but can also be trimmed to maintain a more formal look and smaller size that serves well as an outdoor Christmas tree or topiary. The soft, rich green foliage is in fern-like sprays and holds the same color year round. This tree has more character than many other slender coniferous evergreens, and it’s a great addition to a semi-natural garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing from 10 to 20 feet tall by 5 to 10 feet wide, depending on whether you let it grow naturally or want to trim for shaping and size purposes, it’s dense evergreen foliage makes the Idyllwild Juniper ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or for a dense privacy hedge or screen in sunny landscape borders. Also a very nice corner plant or espalier in home foundation plantings. It shears well so makes for the perfect outdoor Christmas tree! A fine addition to the conifer garden, rock garden and Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 7 feet apart for solid hedges and privacy screens; 15 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Idyllwild Juniper is easy to grow in locations that provide well-drained soils and full sun to mostly sun. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. It is a very low maintenance plant and exceptionally drought tolerant when established. No pruning is necessary however can be trained to various shapes for topiary or the perfect outdoor Christmas tree.
