Description
A beautiful and low-maintenance North American native, Prairie Sky Switch Grass forms attractive upright clumps of powdery sky blue foliage topped with airy, cloud-like plumes of rose-pink flowers in mid summer that persist through fall. The brick red seed heads are carried on showy plumes displayed in abundance from late summer to mid fall. The leaves turn red on the tips as the season progresses turning to a gorgeous gold in the fall. Performing best in full to mostly sun and tolerating both moist and dry conditions, Prairie Sky supplies an ideal wildlife habitat providing shelter and food for songbirds. In case you were wondering, Switch Grass gets its name from the calming swishing sound produced with a gentle breeze.
Landscape & Garden Uses
growing 5 to 6 feet tall and maybe half as wide, the Prairie Sky Red Switch Grass is a compact selection that is great for containers or as an accent, in groupings or natural hedge in the landscape. Looks especially nice in combination plantings with yellow, orange or white flowering shrubs, trees, perennials and other flowering plants. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird gardens, red theme gardens and native gardens.

Growing Preferences
A North American native grass, Prairie Sky Red Switch Grasses is very easy to grow in a wide range of soil, even clay, sandy and dry soils. They don’t like an organically rich soil so there’s no need to add compost or humus to the native soil when planting. They grow best in full sun but will tolerate some light shade…but not too much or plants might become floppy. Maintenance is minimal. Cut clumps back to the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
