Description
A treat for you and the butterflies too, the Rose Swamp Milkweed is a super-hardy and easy-to-grow North American native perennial that can be grown and enjoyed by gardeners in USDA Zones 3 to 9b, which covers most of the country! A vital host plant for Monarch butterflies that provides essential food and habitat for both the growing caterpillars and adult butterflies, this beauty features abundant 2-inch clusters of vanilla-scented flowers with rose pink petals and white centers from mid to late summer. The nectar-rich flowers are very attractive to butterflies and the plant is a very important food source for the larval stage of Monarch butterflies. Rose Swamp Milkweed thrives in consistently moist to saturated soils in garden beds or containers. Perfect for those sunny wet spots!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Rose Swamp Milkweed is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings or mass plantings in soils that stay consistently moist or saturated. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, bog gardens, perennial gardens, native gardens, wetland gardens, cottage gardens, and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 feet apart for groupings; 6 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Rose Swamp Milkweed is exceptionally easy to grow and care for. It grows best in a consistently moist to saturated soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Too much shade and flowering will be diminished. At least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested for best flowering. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
