Descriptions
A new and more adaptive hybrid Illicium cross between I. floridanum and I. mexicanum, the Scorpio Star Flower Anise breaks the mold with a low and mounding habit to around 5 feet tall and and equally as wide. The plants in our Georgia and North Carolina gardens bloom year round! A perfect choice for shady home foundation plantings and landscape borders, its abundant 2 to 3 inch star-shaped flowers with green eyes shine like stars against the backdrop of evergreen, deep blue-green leaves that have a wonderful anise scent. That said, in more sun the leaves will be more of an olive green color, but still handsome. Extremely adaptable, this hybrid will thrive in moist or dry shade and part shade to dense shade! What’s more, the deer, rabbits and most other pests turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and rounded form 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, Scorpio Star Flower Anise is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a low evergreen hedge in home foundation plantings and sunny or shady woodland borders. Perfect for planting under large trees. An excellent home foundation plant. Also nice in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to woodland gardens, white them gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Scorpio Star Flower Anise is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in part shade to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade in the afternoon. No pruning necessary. That said, plants can be selectively pruned for shaping purposes.

I received this plant really quickly after placing the order. It was well packed and larger than I anticipated, it even had some flower buds. I planted right away and it’s been a couple of weeks, it’s holding up pretty good, unfortunately the flower buds fell off probably stressed after planting in new place.———————————————————Thanks for the photo. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy your purchase for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I have purchased several items from Wilson Brothers and have been positively impressed. One of my first purchases was a Scorpio Star Anise, I was in a hurry to plant it and I think it got too much sun. It died! After 4 or 5 more purchases, roses, camellias, iris all of which I have very pleased with I decided to give the Scorpio another chance. Scorpio number 2 is planted in a more shaded spot right next to my pool pavilion as an accent plant where I can see every day. The plant is doing quite well. I am pleased and will continue to buy more from Wilson. Everything has come quickly and in good condition. Thanks Wilson!————————————–You’re very welcome!
