Description
An excellent choice for a garden pond, wetland garden or near ponds, streams or other bodies of water, Carex lurida is a large tufted wetland sedge with a fountain like habit with narrow, bright chartreuse green leaves that are about a foot long. In late spring stiff triangular stems rise up to 3 feet above the foliage displaying chartreuse bottlebrush shaped spikes that are followed by attractive brown seed spikes. This bold sedge flourishes in sun or part shade in moist to wet sites. A nice accent in the rain garden or container water gardens and the flower stems are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements. Excellent paired in the garden with Swamp Milkweed, Cardinal Flower, Blue Flag Iris, Horsetail Reed Grass and Soft Rush.
Shallow Sedge is the host plant to many different species of skippers and moths and a nesting place and source of food for the Sedge Wren.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a clump to 24 to 36 inches tall and 1 to 2 feet tall, the Shallow Sedge is ideal for use as an accent or planted in groupings around the edges of ponds, lakes, streams and any other sunny sites that have a consistently moist to wet soil. Also an excellent choice for use in containers that can be situated in the margins of the garden pond. A fine addition the the rain garden, wetland garden, native garden and wildlife garden.
