Description
A North American native that prefers life on the moist to wet side, Soft Rush is a hardy evergreen grass-like plant with a striking vertical habit that thrives on moist to wet garden soils and container gardens and even in the shallow margins of garden ponds, lakes, slow moving stream or any area other wet areas. Growing in a dense clump, the narrow stems are rounded and lustrous green with pointed tips and no obvious leaves. In summer loose greenish flower clusters and attractive tiny brown capsules form on the sides of the stems. Every landscape has a wet spot or two and this is an easy-to-grow and attractive texture plant in most every state in America!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright clump 36 to 48 tall and 24 to 36 inches wide, Soft Rush is ideal for use as a vertical accent in small garden spaces or containers or in groupings in landscape borders, garden beds and home foundation plantings. Excellent for use in pots, planters and other containers which can be placed on the patio or in the margins of the garden pond. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bog gardens, rock gardens, wetland gardens, pond gardens, native gardens and rain gardens.
Growing Preferences
Soft Rush is easy to grow in most any moist to wet soil of average fertility in full sun to part shade. Grows well in standing water so is suitable for use in the garden pond with the base of the plant at water level or higher. Maintenance is minimal. If necessary, the foliage can be refreshed annually by cutting back the old stems before new growth begins to emerge in spring. After doing so, bright, new greenery will emerge.
