Description
‘Southern Gentleman’ is a male Winterberry Holly that is the perfect stud for pollinating southern winterberry varieties, which have a later blooming time, such as ‘Sparkleberry’, ‘Winter Red’,‘Cacapon’, ‘Shaver’, ‘Sunset’, and ‘Winter Gold’. It is a vigorous growing, upright rounded shrub with glossy, dark green leaves through the warm season that turn yellow to purple-bronze in fall. Its white flowers do not produce berries, however Southern Gentleman is essential for enjoying the female berry bling!
Note: Southern Gentleman will pollinate five or more female winterberry hollies that are growing within 100 feet. That said. closer is better.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Southern Gentleman Holly is excellent for use to pollinate female winterberry hollies, such as Winter Red, Sparkleberry, and other Ilex verticillata and Ilex serrata cultivars. One Southern Gentleman can pollinate 5 or more females growing within 100 feet, so only one of this super stud is needed for an average size yard. Excellent for use in moist areas or along the banks of streams, ponds and other bodies of water.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Winterberry hollies are very easy to grow in consistently moist to wet acidic soils of average or better fertility. They are adaptable to both light and heavy soils and grow well in poorly drained soils including boggy, wet conditions. Generally one male winterberry holly will be sufficient for pollinating 5 to 10 female plants. Flowers are born on new growth so you can prune to shape in late winter or early spring.

I found some great female Winter Red Winterberry’s locally and wanted to add them to my garden but no pollinator was available. I searched on line and found Southern Gentleman at Wilson’s.
