Description
A rugged but very pretty perennial plant that thrives in well-drained to dry soils, ‘Splendens’ Armeria, also called Sea Thrift, is adored for her abundant spherical clusters of rosy reddish pink flowers perched atop stiff stems that rise above an attractive, tidy mound of grassy, dark green, evergreen foliage in April to May. Sporadic rebloom may occur during the summer months. The butterflies and beneficial pollinators will thank you for planting this one. A low-maintenance perennial well-suited for dry locations and coastal gardens. Compact and low growing, it’s a perfect plant for edging, border fronts, rock gardens, wall pockets and containers or massed in small areas.
Armeria is native to the northern hemisphere, including both Europe and North America. Its native range includes Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, where it thrives in gravely tundra and along coastal cliffs and beaches. It is well adapted to coastal growing conditions with salt spray, as well as inland gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 6 to 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide, Splendens Sea Thrift is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or as an edging, border front, or massed in small areas. A fine addition to cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, pink theme gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Armeria are very easy to grow in a very well drained to dry soil of average to low fertility. Wet and overly rich soils are problematic. Clay and other compact soils need to be amended to ensure good drainage. Not picky about soil pH. Grows best in full sun to light shade. We suggest at least 7 hours of sun per day for best growth and flowering. Removing spent flower heads can encourage rebloom. No need for fertilize though an occasional very light application of an organic plant food can be beneficial.
