Description
An exceptional Iris, performing reliably in all but the shadiest of gardens, and having both beautiful flowers and valuable foliage. The sturdy stems of strongly scented, white flag iris flowers are are held above compact clumps of sword-like, grey-green leaves. Used in great effect mass plantings or as edgings, due to the neat foliage. Iris virginica, also known as the Cemetery Iris, White Cemetery Iris, or the White Flag Iris, the leaves are grey-green, and broadly sword-shaped. It is fan-shaped and contains two or three flowers. The flowers are grey or silvery in bud, and are white or off-white.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 1 to 3 feet tall and and equally as wide, the White Southern Flag Iris is ideal for use planted in pots that are situated in the margins of garden ponds. An excellent accent in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, rock gardens, and yellow color theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
The White Southern Flag Iris is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained to wet soil and full sun to part shade.
