Description
Need flower color in your landscape from October through December? Meet the American Witch Hazel, also called common witch hazel, a North American native beauty that produces LOADS of bright yellow fringe-like flowers that nearly cover the branches during mid fall to early winter, when we need color most in the landscape. You can leave this one to grow naturally as a large shrub or remove lower branches to form an outstanding small specimen tree similar in shape to crape myrtle or loropetalum but reaching 15 to 20 feet tall at maturity. Oval, medium to dark green leaves (to 6β long) turn shades of yellow in fall preceding the bloom.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and equally as wide, American Witch hazel can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural tall hedge. As the shrub grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves well as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundations. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, native plant gardens, medicinal gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Β Β 10 feet apart for solid hedge; Β 22 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
American Witch hazel is very easy to grow in most any well-drained but moist soils in full sun to part shade. It prefers a moist acidic soil rich in organic matter but also grows well in heavy clay soils. Best flowering in full sun. Little pruning is required but responds well to it for shaping or tree forming.

This was my second purchase of this tree after I received my first one and was impressed with the quick shipping, packaging and health of the first one. I decided my first one needed a “friend” and the first one seemed to lean towards it in a few days as I set the pot next to it when I first received it since we’re having a tree removal before I can plant it:)—————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy your purchase for years to come!
